Star Grade 3 |
|
|
Water Safety Level 1 - List four things which make water outside dangerous.
- List what to do to stay safe in the pool.
Level 2
- Explain what dangers to look out for at the beach.
- Explain the third point of the Water Safety Code.
Level 3
- Explain why it is dangerous to swim in lakes or ponds.
- Explain what the Rookie Community Response forms are, how to use them and who to give them to.
Level 4
- Discuss who to call in an emergency.
- Explain the fourth point of the water Safety Code.
Self Rescue
Level 1 - Enter deep water using a straddle entry and explain when it is used.
- Scull head first or feet first for 10 metres
- Swim 75 metres, 50 metres on the front and 25 metres on the back.
- Tread water for 90 seconds, giving the International Distress Signal for 30 seconds.
- Surface dive – head first and recover an object from a depth of 1 metre .
- Instruct a rescuer to offer you a piece of clothing and peform a Reach Rescue.
- Swim 25 metres Lifesaving Backstroke or Side Stroke.
Level 2
- Enter deep water and swim 100 metres in less than 4 minutes.
- Tread water for two minutes, giving the International Distress Signal.
- Swim continuously 150 metres, half on the front and half on the back.
- Swim Lifesaving Backstroke or Side Stroke for 50 metres.
- With a floating aid adopt the HELP position for 2 minutes, give the International Distress Signal for 30 seconds.
- Remove clothing in shallow water.
- Surface dive feet first and head first during a 50 metres swim.
Level 3
- Perform a Compact Jump and explain when to use it.
- Tread water for 2 minutes giving the International Distress Signal and shoutin loudly for help.
- Swim 50 metres dressed, remove clothing except for swimwear, then swim 50 metres.
- Swim 25 metres, during the swim surface dive – head first and swim 2 metres under water fully submerged.
- Climb out of deep water without using the steps.
- Explain the difference between a lifejacket and a buoyancy jacket and when to use them.
- Explain why ice is dangerous and what to do if you fall through.
Level 4
- Peform a straddle entry wearing clothes and swim 100 metres.
- Dressed and with afloating aid, adopt the HELP position for 4 minutes.
- Enter the water in clothes and swim 200 metres. Remove your clothing and swim another 75 metres.
- Swim underwater wearing blacked-out goggles through a hoop.
- Demonstrate how to walk across a current of flowing water and explain what to do.
- Explain why the HELP position conserves heat.
Rescue
Level 1 - Discuss what you should consider during the assessment stage before the start of any rescue.
- Demonstrate the actions of an injured swimmer with an arm or leg injury.
- Perform the back-off when a casualty tries to grab you in the water.
- Take up the Stand-off position away from a casualty.
- Perform a Wade Rescue with a pole.
- Discuss when a Rookie should perform a Swim and Tow Rescue.
- Timed rescue. In less than 4 minutes swim 100 metres. During the swim surface dive to recover an object from a depth of between 1 and 1.5 metres.
Level 2
- Demonstrate the actions of a weak swimmer.
- Perform a Throw Rescue with a rope.
- Perform a Swim with an Aid Rescue (accompanied).
- Put a casualty in the Support position.
- Perform a Swim and Tow Rescue using an Extended Tow.
- Perform a rescue in a simulated emergency.
Level 3
- Demonstrate the actions of a non-swimmer.
- Swim 40 metres to a casualty and perform a Swim with an Aid Rescue (accompanied) for 35 metres.
- Perform a Swim with an Aid Rescue (non-contact) and help the casualty to climb out.
- Explain when to make physical contact with a casualty in the water and when you should not.
- Perform the Back-off and take up the Stand-off position.
- Perform a Swim and Tow rescue using a Support Tow.
- Timed rescue. In less than 6 minutes swim 150 metres, during the swim Surface dive to recover an object from a depth of between 1 and 1.5 metres.
Level 4
- Demonstrate the actions of an unconscious swimmer.
- Demonstrate how to turn an unconscious casualty in the water.
- Swim 50 metres to an unconscious casualty and perform a Swim and Tow Rescue using an Extended Tow for 20 metres.
- Pull ashore an unconscious casualty.
- Explain what the Rookie Action Plan is.
- Timed rescue. In less than 6 minutes and 30 seconds swim 175 metres, during this Surface dive, swim 3 metres under water and recover an object from a depth of 1 to 1.5 metres.
- Perform a Swim and Tow rescue using a Clothing Tow.
- Rescue a casualty in simulated emergency.
Emergency Response.
Level 1 - Explain what DR ABC Stands for.
- Demonstrate the checks for danger, response and shouting for help.
- Demonstrate how to check for circulation.
- Demonstrate Rescue Breathing for 1 minute.
- Explain the signs and symptoms and demonstrate the treatment for shock.
Level 2
- Explain the checks you perform on a casualty before starting Rescue Breathing.
- Explain first aid treatment for hiccups.
- Explain and demonstrate what to do if a casualty is bleeding.
Level 3
- Demonstrate the checks for danger, response and shouting for help.
- Demonstrate ho to open the airway, check for breathing and check circulation on a casualty.
- Explain the correct action in a case where the pulse is absent.
- Explain what to do for a nosebleed.
Level 4
- Demonstrate how to check for danger, response and shouting for help.
Demonstate how to open the airway and check for breathing and for circulation with a casualty on their front. - Demonstate the correct action when the pulse is absent.
- Demonstrate how to turn the casualty from front to back.
- Demonstrate rescue breathing.
- Demonstrate how to determine the correct hand position to apply chest compressions.
- Demonstrate how to put an arm in a sling.
